Hi everyone. I Have a 98 SVT, today I was changing the steering wheel. I went to disconnect the battery and there was like a park. I didnt think much at the time until I got everything put back together, now the car won't start. When I turn the key all you hear is "Tick, Tick, Tick, Tick" really fast (like the car trying to crank but not turning over), the windshield wipers turn on as I hold the key and the inside lights come on but dim if I tap the brake pedal. My dad told me a few possibilities on what it could be like the starter solenoid, or that the spark could've caused a cell in the battery to go bad. Are any of these possible and are there any other things that it might be? Thanks

What did you spark when you disconnected the battery?
First and formost....open your owners manual...locate which fuses to check..and check them. You may have blown a few different fuses....if that doesn't work...check back with us.

have someone give u a push and pop the clutch...should start up. let it sit there for a couple minutes once the car is running. turn off the car and see if the problem continues.
this happened to me once, pushed it down the driveway and started it up. a lot of black smoke came out of the exhaust. (probably running rich) took it for a 15 minute drive and the problem hasnt come back.

Looked like the spark happened when the wrench I was using to disconnect the battery cables touched the metal part of the car. I am also wondering why the interior lights dim when the exterior lights come on and why the winshield wipers come on if i hold the key in the run(?) position. Thanks for all your help so far everyone, any other ideas?

Take it to Autozone and get the alternater checked and see what it is putting out.
Sounds like you fried a fuse, so you have to get it running first!! Check the info giving and check back with what you find.

ALWAYS disconnect the negative battery cable first and you'll never have this problem.

a weak, but not completely dead battery will act like that, not enough juice to turn over the engine, but lights & stuff sort of work. Wipers may have come on because you accidently hit the wiper lever and didn't realize it.

sounds to me like your battery connection isn't up to par. I suggest you clean both battery connections and get them back together tight. the spark you got while removing the cable can't hurt the car but can harm you. That is why it's always recommended to remove the negative cable. Since the negative cable is connected to the car body any contact from your wrench while removing it will not cause a spark. So clean 'em up and you should be good to go.

Thanks for all your help guys. It turned out to be the battery. I took it to Autozone (Really nice guys working there) to have it tested and the battery started smoking from the positive terminal. Got the battery changed, free of charge and it started up just fine. Thanks again!
