Ok I have had trouble with the alternator in my contour twice first ford replaced it then I bought a alt. from oreileys and had it put on, my battery light came on last night so I took it to a local alt and starter shop they said the belt was slipping and at idle it wasn't charging correctly I said cool simple fix, but tonight I ran it about thirty miles then went to a friends and parked it when I got back in and cranked it the battery light came on so I just shut it off and said screw it for the night. Does anyone have any suggestions a friend said it could be the tensioner and the belt could be loose I dont know though. I have two amps in the car which dim the lights so I was going to put a yellow top optima in tomorrow to help the amps from drawing so much juice and causing the alt to work harder.

That and have you had the battery tested?

Many times, the wiring attached to the alternator is corroded.

Yeah I cleaned the terminals and the battery checked ok, I dont know about the alternator being corroded I will check that today, but will the tensioner pull cause this also, the alt guy said my old belt was slipping and this is what caused it so I dont know.

Ignition off, 12.5 volt at battery a quick check but you really have to give it a load test. With ignition on turn on your headlights, heater blower and a few other items and see if bat maintains 12.5 for a few minutes. If it drops to 11 or less you have a bat problem. Alt needs good battery to charge properly.

p.s. Belt slippage would normally give squeal, particularly when accelerating.

A fully charged battery should make about 13.2 volts with no loads applied. Lead acid batteries should make 2.2 volts per cell, 12 volt batteries have 6 cells.

In order for the battery to be charged the charging source output voltage must be greater than battery voltage. With the engine running you should see somewhere around 13.8 to 14.8 volts.

If the battery terminals are clean and all your inspections have found the battery to be in good condition check the ground wire connections where they are attached to the engine or the car's frame. Remove the ground and check the area under the cable's terminal looking for corrosion. Clean all corrosion with a wire brush and then reattach the cable and apply battery terminal protector to the ground attachment.
