I have a 98.5 Contour which I bought last year.

Problem:
I have not been able to get the key to open the trunk and wonder if there is supposed to be a seperate key or if the trunk lock is busted.

a) If there is supposed to be a key can I get one somewhere?

b) If the lock is busted can I replace it myself?

Help is greatly appreciated.

The same key that opens your door/starts your car should open it. It probably is busted. Can you open it with the pull lever inside the car? How about the remote(given your car has keyless entry)? Maybe something came loose?

can you get the key to turn? i had a problem with my trunk on my 95 contour gl atx,the key would turn but it wouldn,t unlock the trunk,so i took the piece of cargo liner right behind the lock off and i found that there was a metal wire that had come loose. after a little work i got it to reconnect, then i tried the key again and it pop the trunk open. hope this helps. smile

thanx for the quick responces.

The Trunk will open with the Trunk leaver inside the car.
I don't have a remote.

I can put the key inside the lock, but it will not turn.

Could it just need some lubricant?
Can I inject some WD-40 in it?

Yeah, I'd give the WD-40 a try. I have used that on locks before. Just wipe the drips off the paint...not sure if it good for it.

It's possible that theres suppose to be two keys, I have a weird triangular/squarish key for the doors/ignition, and an oval one for the glovebox/truck, although I don't use that because I have my remote...

Yes, my 95 contour has two keys also...but from above posts was assuming they went to one key in the 98 model.

I don't bother carrying the trunk key either and I don't even have keyless...I just use the inside release lever to open it.

My 96 Mystique that had a keyed glovebox had TWO keys, The second one was the glovebox and the trunk. My 99' SVT has just one. Also someone may have put a different lock on the trunk for their OWN reasons and didn't give it to you , or the dealer you got the car from. You can remove the lock yourself, and have it "rekeyed" for about $10 from a car lock place.
