My wife has a 2000 SVT and at 30,000 miles, 3rd gear quit working, Ford fixed tranny, and ever since, Sometimes the shifter will not engage first or reverse, until you push the clutch pedal at least twice. Sometimes it also gets hung in reverse, where pushing the clutch in, does nothing. This only happens in 1st and reverse.. the clutch doesn't slip at all and the other gears feel fine.. Any ideas, the service people say its the clutch, but this problem didn't appear until after Ford worked on it.

It does sound like the clutch is not fully disengaging. The easy thing to try is to bleed the clutch slave cylinder. Maby they got air in the system.

On the Contour where is the slave cylinder? When you say bleed, do you mean burp, Ie pop off the cap and let air out? It isn't a sealed system, so it should bleed itself right.. I was thinking linkage bind, which is kinda what it feels like...

First, welcome! Any man whose wife drives a CSVT has my respect...
As to linkage binding, there are many reports of problems with the shifter cables. You may want to do a search on that issue.
The clutch slave is bled through the bleeder on top of the tranny housing, accessible through the engine compartment. And while the clutch and brakes aren't completely closed systems, they basically act that way, with air being able to be trapped at the slave cylinder or brake piston end of the lines.

Thank you very much, that makes sense. Yeah, she loves her car, but the service guys at Ford give her the run-around when she tries to get stuff fixed... I took up the fight 2 months ago.. they all swear its the clutch, but it doesn't slip and It will still light up the tires..

UPDATE. I took the car in this morning, made the Service manager ride with me, showed him that it hangs in reverse and then won't shift into first, he said something non commital like " you weren't at a complete stop" Then I dropped the BOMB- "it didn't start until after 3rd gear was fixed by your shop, do you know if they put the new for 1/2001 gear lube TSB in? Or bled the slave cylinder" The look on his face was worth it... he sd, I'll get it back to the shop and we'll go from there...

Ah! The power of a good message board, a few friendly locals and the massive untapped knowledge of the internet. Hard to beat, even at a good shop.
Glad that you was able to make them take you seriously.
