A few months ago (12/23/01) I replaced my spark plug wires because my car was running rough and was misfiring (blinking CEL). AutoZone checked the computer code - cylinder 3 misfire detected. I got some 8mm wires from them (forgot the brand) because they didn't have the 9mm ones. Replaced them later that day and it was running great. After about a week or two, the roughness started coming back, but it was not nearly as noticeable. Now, a few months later it is back to running pretty rough, it?s misfiring, and the CEL is back on (because of the misfires). Are those wires I got that cheap?
Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Should I just get some new 9mm Motorcraft wires from Ford, or is it possibly something else such as the ignition coil pack?
What gets me is that it cleared up for that short while after I had just put the new wires on then progressively got worse.
Well, I appreciate any help!

I had a set of autozone wires (Red, "Double Silicone") for about a year and they worked fine. It could be a loose wire connection or possibly plugs, or an intake leak. Even the cheap wires should last 40-50K miles.

i would say check wires for loose connection or broken boot maybe....places like pep boys and autozone wires r kinda hit n miss on quality...when i had my taurusaurus it was running fine after major mods (just to keep it running not to increase performance wink ) then started mis/backfiring on the road sometimes....finally one day i stopped to get some slow food at carl's jr and when i started the car back up it was sounding like the engine was dying....runing really bad....i nursed it home and it cleared up...then the next day or so the problem back....i called the tow truck and the driver opened to hood and had me start the car...played with the wires and figured out that one was bad....saved me big dough did that guy....went and bought new plugs and wires and problem solved

There are lots of things that can set a misfire code besides plug wires.
