The car has been slowly using up fluid, but I could never find the leak...until now. Reenlty it began using more, and after a couple of weeks of adding a pint a week, I found fluid leaking from the rear drums onto the inside of the wheels. Took the wheels off and found that the fittings are all dry, but it is clear that the fluid is leaking somewhere inside the drums. But I can't get the drums off. Anybody know how to get them to part company with the car?

Both sides appears to be leaking about equally, both are progressing at about the same rate. Anybody ever hear of something like this?

The car is a 98.0 SE sport, 2.5 ATX with 99,995 miles. Bought the car with 61K, haven't touched the rear brakes, did the fronts about 8 months ago 85K miles.

If it's coming out of your drums, your wheel cylinder is bad. In order to get the drums off, your going to have to beat them off with a hammer. That's what I did with mine. Before doing anyting make sure there isn't a washer that is on one of the studs becuase that kind of holds the drum on.
Well, I hope you fix the problem.

Before pounding on the drums (and you probably still need to), soak the area where the drum meets the hub with penetrating oil. The hub and drum rust together here. When you start pounding on the drum, you want to get the drum loose from the hub. As you knock the rust loose, pound on one side and then the other to get the drum to walk off the hub.

Before putting it back together, clean off the worst of the rust and apply some anti sieze to the area to make it easier next time.

I expect it is likely the wheel cylinders. What I can't figure out is why both failed together, and both seem to be increasing the level of leaking in lock step.

Wharre to hammer the things to get them off. I tried with my 2lb short sledge to sort of tap them, then tried knock them off using a screwdriver to trasfer the blow to the lip of the drum. No luck. Lot's of penetrating oil around the hub to break up any rust. No results.

Thaks Jim,

I was posting the question you were answering while you were posting.

Is there a puller tool that would make this easier. I sort of suspect that these drums have enver been off the car. The car now has almost 100K and is 5 1/2 years old,

if you have trouble getting the rear drums off make sure you have the emergency brakes off or you will never remove the rear drums.. also remove the sheet metal nut like retainers that hold the drums on to the studs.. then go in the back of the brake drum and use a screw driver to remove the rubber plugs to get into the rear of the drum assembly and push on the star like adjusting part to get the brake shoes to release pressure and then they should come off. on a 83 mustang i had the rear drums so badly scored that i had to use a crow bar to break the inside retainers off as the shoes(metal back part) was chewing into the brake drums and no adjustments were doing any good....

DO NOT beat on the brake drums. Instead, invest in a good brake drum puller (it looks like a large version of a steering wheel puller), save your self the hassle & save your brake drums (if they are worth saving)!

I don't remember the cost of the puller since I've had mine for a long time, but they are worth it @ any price.....my $.02...

Where did you get your puller? I would prefer to use/have a puller like this rather than pounding away on things.
