I have two questions on the hose assembly that runs from the air cleaner outlet tube to the IAC valve intake (on the UIM):

1. In between the two hoses there is a plastic part that has a large chamber. The part # that I have is 93BB-9F763-LA. What does the chamber do?

2. The hose that directly connects to the IAC valve intake (on the UIM) has a fine white powder all over the outside and inside. The white powder is nowhere else on the engine. I assume that it is eminating from the rubber itself, but was wondering if anyone has any comments on this phenomenom.

I think the chamber you are describing is just a little muffler. It didn't seem to do much good though as it did not prevent the moose noise. I haven't seen this white powder on that part on other cars. Are you sure your car hasn't picked up an expensive habit?

Like Jim said, the chamber is supposed to stop the moose from happening. It doesn't work that well!

Mine has white powdery stuff on it as well. I just assumed it was the rubber reacting with something...

Has anyone tried to replace the whole assembly (which includes the "muffler" and the two hoses on both sides) with just one hose???

I was wondering if this might help the "moose" situation and idling in general?!?

I recently bought a 2000 SE Sport with the 2.5 and it is making the "moose" noise. I had a buddy look for TSB'S and SSM'S (this is before I found this sight and realized it is common) anyhow there is a Special Service Message on it that simply say's "some 98-00 may experience a "hoot" noise from the idle air bypass valve on deceleration, usually in cold ambient temperature" it goes on to say "This may be due to the incorrect idle air bypass valve being installed during service due to a parts cataloging error that list the wrong part number of F6LZ-AC, the correct part # is XS2Z-9F715-BA "

I am just wondering how many dealers are still installing the wrong ones on these vehicles. And it sounds more like ford had a bad part and then updated it to a new one rather than it being replaced during a service. I am pretty sure the one on my car is originall, I'll check the part # when i take it off. Of course, they could have been putting the wrong ones on from the factory and didn't want to word it like that in their service message.

UPDATE Well, I just went out and checked and mine has the updated part # on it. My 2000 doesn't have the "muffler" that you refered to on the tube. I am wodering if this is just a characteristic of the AIC when it starts to clog. I will try cleaning it before I spend $70 on a new one.

Yes, I've replaced it with a 5/8" ID hose, which works fine but will not stop the moose without the THF copper plug in place. There is a sharp bend needed to run the hose from the UIM to the right port on the intake tube/accordian hose which could crimp the hose. Other options:

  • Use 1/2" flexible SS natural gas line with rubber hose for the couplings. Handles the bend OK, but whistles at several RPM points.
  • Use the pre-shaped S hose without the soup can thingy. Add some copper elbows and straight hose sections to complete the connections between the S hose and the intake tube. (clunky...)
  • Make a elbow with 1/2" flexible SS natural gas line but use mostly 5/8" hose to connect to UIM/intake tube. Use THF plug in the winter. (current setup...)
