My 2000 SVT has started making a very nasty clattering noise on startup when the engine is cold. The colder the air temp the more pronounced the noise. It started in Nov when I first ran synthetic oil (Valvoline) w/Motorcraft filter. I ran the Valvoline for 1,000 miles and switched to Mobile 1. The noise has progressively gotten worse.
I see in the FAQ a TSB covering this for early 95's. It identifies the problem as oil leak-down causing the chain guide to hit the tensioner. I was having visions of lower rod bearings or main crank bearings going bad!!
My question is has anybody run into this with post 95 cars and would changing from conventional oil to synthetic on an engine w/47,000 miles cause this? If it is the chain tensioner, what needs to be done to fix it?

Synthetic flows better than conventional at low temps, so it is probably leaking down like the 95's. What oil filter are you using? That was critical in 95's -- it must have a good anti-drainback valve!

I'm using a Motorcraft filter. In the past I used Fram, until I read on this board how crappy they are.

I've got the same thing with my E0 now on synthetic oil, and I've been told it won't hurt anything. Replacing the tensioner is a costly endevour and IMO not worth it. The noise will go away once it warms up some.

Is it a constant chatter or just when you turn on the car for a short moment?? If it's just for a short moment, I wouldn't worry about it, seems to be a normal thing with synthetic oil. All that is is your lifters and so forth hasn't received oil pressure yet so it makes a bit of a tacking sound. I've had that for more than a year with no ill effects at all.

It will be more than worth it to keep the timing chain from slipping a tooth or two... Which would you rather do? Rebuild/Replace an Engine or Replace the Timing Chain and Guides?

This is a problem for some of us with Zetecs also. I have had the chatter for over 2 years with no problems. I dont even worry about it anymore.

The clatter is just at startup and lasts 1-2 seconds.
