I am in the process of designing a true CAI without fabricating into the fender wall. I have been looking at SpeedDemons' Ingen concept and I am trying to follow something like it. I have some questions though.
Does the distance from the TB to the MAF matter?
If I change the distance will I start getting CELs?
Also, lets say that the MAF is mounted on a 90 degree bend (or after it), will this cause the same CELs or as long as it is the same distance from the TB it will be fine?

Kind of like this
and this

Thanks SpeedDemon for the pics

i dont remember posting pics of a cai but i'll throw in my pennies anyhow..

first i'd like to see whatever you come up with so be sure to post :P

the MAF thing is a big deal, one of my engineering buddies actually suspects half my gains from my KKM are due to the filter difference from stock and sending the maf a bit of a false signal b/c of the KKM (i'll ask him to post if you want details) anyhow as the MAF is obviously critical to how the engine runs with respect to air readings i'd say the closer you can slap that bad boy to the engine itself the better off you'll be... but i'm just a blithering idiot with a keyboard on these things..

Sorry bout that Speed Demon. The users name is SpeedDemons on FCO.

For those that have the maf further away from the TB, have you noticed any gains?

I was asking because I thought that the closer the MAF is, the more accurate reading you will get. Wouldn't you run rich because the MAF would be giving different readings?

Also, I thought our cars already ran rich. If this is correct wouldn't getting the maf as close as possible be the best idea to lean out the car a little.

I might be way off here. Any experts want to give me a hand.

Yeah that's my car there.
I have never gotten a Cell, and it was running for a good two years with it.
From what I heard was that there was less turbulence closer to the filter, but you wanted to keep it near the the throttle body as well. (Im not totally sure why)
But to answer your question, (which you could have asked me)
No, I never had any bad thoughts towards using the CAI.
