Thanks everyone for the help--I need a little more. I got the door panel off-the metal cable acts like it's too short--I can push the window down and about half way up til it runs out of cable. I don't seem to be able to see any of the white plastic parts mentioned in other posts--does anyone know of a drawing that shows the window assembly?

you gonna need the $12.00 hayes book from auto zone for your contour/mercury mystique to get to this door regulator... quite a job if you not familar with it.. i been working on cars for over 30 yrs. and would never have guessed how to do it without the hayes book... not like older fords at all.....

It's a piece of cake. 30 min job. Plastic is on the metal slide where the window bolts at the bottom. Check the FAQ for a picture. Replace the whole regulator. Make sure you detach the window from the regulator to remove from the door.

I believe that there is another plastic pulley at the top of the "metal slide" as well.
