Just bought a used '99 Contour (4 banger) with 34,000 miles. I'm loving it so far, except it seem to have a starting issue. When I turn the key to the start position the engine turns over and starts just fine. But sometimes (happens more often when the car is cold) when I let up on the key (so as to let it go into the "on" position) the enginen will die. It sounds as if I didn't let the engine turn over enough, but I know that I have because I can hear that the engine has started. I've found that if I turn the key and turn the engine over until it starts, and then slowly back to key off so it's in between the "start" and "on" position, so that the starter has disengaged, let it sit there for a second, and then gently let the key go to the "on" position there's never any problems. Does this sound like an ignition switch problem? Or could it be something else?

Thanks!

If the dash lamps, like the check engine, seat belt, airbag lamps go out when the engine is off but the keyswitch is in the "ON" position you have an electrical bug. Either the switch is bad of the relay(s) they pick are faulty.

I think the dash lights do go out! I'll have to keep an eye on that. Any idea why this would happen only (almost only) when the car is cold?

I confirmed this morning that the dash lights to go out and the enginen dies, but they do flash back right afterwards. Any ideas for other things I can do to troubleshoot this before I take it to the dealer? Thanks!
