I searched and couldn't find anything in this forum about people having a problem with a cracked oil pan. I just got my tour back from the tranny shop and I always had a slight oil leak and thought it was my rear main seal so the tranny shop changed that for me but that didn't fix the problem. He looked at the leak more and he found a hairline crack in the oil pan right along one of the lines that it has in it. What I am wondering is how this could have happened because there are no marks at all on the pan because I never hit anything with it and where is the best place to get a new on and the last question is Is it worth iy to do that oil pan mod since I have it down and is so wheres the how to? Thanks in advance, Jerry

You can buy the updated pan from Bill Jenkins for under $100 IIRC. People have mixed opinions on whether or not the fins in there actually do anything. But for a replacement pan, I'd say that is your best bet.

Not only do the fins not do anything but the pan holds less oil too. (It's noticeably shallower!) It may be "updated" but it's defitely not an "Upgrade"

So.... I think I should go with Original Ford parts on this one. Less oil is never good and I'm not always taking hard corners so I don't need the "fins" in my daily driving. Also How many quarts of oil do you guys use when you change it? My manual says 5.5 I beleive but I have heard people say to put 6 qts in? Thanks alot for the input. anyone else have any ideas?

I too had a crack in the oil pan. As far as I know, the oil pan was layered aluminum that could crack if the drain plug was tightened too much. I had to replace my oil pan when this happened to me. Ford wanted $150 (Canadian) for the pan but I was able to get one from a scrap yard for $50. Good luck.

Talk to a welding shop. It might be a good candidate for heliarc welding. You will have to take it off the car though.

Well Ford wanted $88 for the pan and anouther $30 for the gasket! So I started to brainstorm. I jacked the tour up as high as I could in the front and dumped the oil, let it sit with the plug out for a few hours to get out as much oil as possible then I found the 2 very small cracks and clean the whole area off and roughed it up abit. Then I used high temp RTV Silicone (the red stuff) and let it sit its still out in the garage on the jacks so we'll see how that fix works first if that doesn't work my dad is really good at welding so I'll turn it over to him. How many quarts of oil do you guys put in every oil change? Thanks, Jerry

5.5 -- 5 in the crankcase and .5 in the Amsoil spin-on filter I use.
