Probably needs a clockspring, probably will not go off all by itself going down the road (No one will guarantee this) May still work in an accident (No one will guarantee this) Official response to this is to not drive the car until it's fixed!

It's giving you an airbag diagnostic code.
Next time the airbag light flashes, note the sequence.
For example, a 3 - 2 will be flash-flash-flash pause flash-flash.
The sequnce will be repeated sveral times.
With this info you'll be able to determine what the problem is.

Two things to note:

There is a recall in effect for airbag sensors (check the FAQ).

An air bag fault effectively disables the system. The bags won't fire as long as a fualt is present.

When I said no one would guarantee a condition with your airbag, I meant that if the light came on and went out intermittently, The airbag would probably not go off unprovoked, and would probably work in a collision, but that you can't be sure under these conditions. If the light is on continuously, the system will be deactivated and the bag will not work. Due to liability concerns, if you contact a dealer about this condition, they will normally tell you to obtain service immediately. As to warranty coverage, If the car is under warranty still, the airbag system components are covered. Rewriting to clarify what was probably an oversimplistic post.
