Stopped off for lunch, got back in my 98 Contour (V6 Automatic SE) heading home and noticed the Tach / Speedometer / Mileage / Trip Meter all DEAD. Pull my Chilton book on Contours (BOY THAT BOOK SUCKS), checked the Power Train Control Fuse and switched it with the starter relay fuse, NOT A FUSE PROBLEM, troubleshooted thru the book it mentions a VSS switch, IS THIS IT?????. Dealership wants $90.00 bucks just to Diganost, Rip-Off Artist, Anyone had this problem? Suggestions, Comments?

It's not a fuse. The Haynes manual is much better. I would lean towards the Vehicle Speed Sensor as this has vital importance to everything.

I don't remember if the contour uses a mechanical drive or electric for the spedometer.
anyways, if its mechanical, I would disconnect one end of the cable conduit, remove the flexible drive shaft to see if it is broken.
If electric, check around the transmission for disconnected electrical connectors.
Also refer to your owners manual, it has a troubleshooting guide and has a figure of all the fuses.

I know yours is an auto, but when I did my 3L swap the VSS was the only connector I didn't get tight, so when I took it out for my first drive I had no speedo. I did still have tach, though - that should come straight from the PCM.

IT WAS A FUSE AFTER ALL> After a little bit of research, I found that the Control Panel fuse under the dash was blown and this caused the problem. It is a 7.5 fuse in slot 30 if any of you experience this problem.

Riding on the back of this question, I am having a speedometer problem. It rests at 40mph, when I am under 40, sometimes it will register the correct speed. However, anything over 40, unless I hit a bump (which is common on New Orleans streets), the needle remains @40mph. When it does pop into place, it will register the correct speed for 5 minutes, then go back to 40. Any suggestions? I know I am probably going to have to have it checked at a shop, but does it sound like a fuse issue, or maybe a wire connection that just needs to be firmed up?

Sounds like the main Speedometer Drive Cable. I just had mine replaced for the same reason....but mine has 165k on a 95 SE. Pop the hood and check the cable to the back right that goes into the firewall just over the brake master cylinder. Check it for cracks especially near the plastic neck.

Thanks! I will take a look. Also, since I am heading to the dealer this weekend to get the recall fuse changed, I will have them fix it if I find a crack. At least it saves me some money so they don't have to spend 5 hours looking- or charge me like they spent 5 hours on it! ;}

Before I got rid of my previous car, a 1994 Tempo, I swapped radios. I liked the Tempo's radio better. That counts as a mod, doesn't it? I also kept one of my Tempo's wheels to use as a spare. I hate those stupid ?compact? spares that come with modern cars. Does this count as a mod? If so, I guess I have two mods. Replaced burned/melted blower switch and connector on 19 February 2002 with a 1P3T toggle switch from Marvac and a Molex connector from Rat Shack; I guess this now makes three mods.)
