My '98 svt Contour has been a great car and has never been in an accident. I left for work this morning and on comes the orange airbag/seatbelt (passive restraint light?) So I cycled the ignition, still on. When I got home I disconnected the battery for 5min. and it is still on. Now my car does have 78000miles but is this normal? Is there a way to fix it? I couldnt find anything on this in the "common probs area."

Usually its a code. Count how many times it flashes, like 3-3, 3-4, etc.

my airbag light flashed a few times on me.. and it turned out to be a bad battery. before you spend any money, go get the battery tested at autozone, etc.

The airbag does flash in a pattern to give you a code. Try making note of it the next time you start your car so that you can write it down and either look it up or post it on here for further help. Airbags usualy don't malfunction all of a sudden so more than likely it is something simple as I-BCruzn stated, but it is possible and I have seen it before.

i think there were a couple guys on here who had the light flashing too. i dont remember what the code was but it turned out that the connectors for the sensors were corroded. so if its one of the codes for that, start cleanin.

I had that code for awhile. It went away, just a dirty connection, like you said. IIRC, it was 3-4. That code was for the drivers side sensor.
