Check engine light on!!!Retrieved code PO401..Egr exhaust insufficient flow. Suspect it is the EGR PRESSURE DIFFERENTIAL SENSOR which reads the pressure in the egr pipe leading to the egr valve. They want $128.00 canadian dollars for the thing. Am I on the right track.
I'll Never ever buy another FORD!!!

Welcome to CEG!

Yes it could be the DPFE (differential pressure feedback EGR sensor) but it's also quite likely to be plugged up EGR passages behind the throttle body. I would check this first since all you need is a throttle body gasket. In the future please give make/year/engine/milage.

Do a search for EGR passages or DPFE for more info.

Good luck!

I'm assuming that includes labor...

Either way, you can buy the part for ~ $50 (U.S.) online and just do it yourself (if you are so inclined).

A P0401 can be a variety of things. If the mechanic knows what he is doing and diagnosed a bad DPFE (differential pressure feedback EGR), then I might give him the benefit of the doubt.

As suggested above, the EGR passages (inside the UIM) that are behind the TB gasket are commonly a problem on our cars. I had a P0401 and that ended up being my problem (I found this out after I had replaced the EGR, EVR, and DPFE). Just remember to buy a new TB gasket if you do the work yourself.

Here are two threads that discuss the cleaning the EGR passages behind the TB gasket:

http://www.contour.org/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=trouble&Number=10673

Here is a list of possible causes on a P0401 from the Ford TSP:

Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0401 indicates that Continuous Memory Self-Test has detected insufficient EGR flow.

Possible causes:
-- EGR valve stuck closed or iced.
-- EGR valve diaphragm leaks.
-- EGR valve or flow path restricted.
-- EGR vacuum hose off, plugged or leaks.
-- VPWR circuit open to EGR Vacuum Regulator (EGR V.R.) solenoid.
-- EVR circuit to PCM open.
-- EVR circuit to PCM shorted to PWR.
-- Differential Pressure Feedback EGR (D.P.F. EGR) sensor pressure hoses both off.
-- D.P.F. EGR sensor pressure hoses reversed.
-- D.P.F. EGR sensor VREF circuit open.
-- Downstream pressure hose off.
-- Downstream pressure hose plugged.
-- Damaged orifice tube assembly.
-- Damaged EGR V.R. solenoid.
-- Damaged D.P.F. EGR sensor.
-- Damaged PCM.

Yes Sentry (Jenkins former job in Mass.)(Sentry list on this site https://www.sentrycars.com/Service/service.htm Chris wants $44.xx US plus shipping. e-mail parts@sentryautogroup.com Beats $ 76 US retail. Wholesale to my cousins shop $38 US. Inflated price for a piece junk part, what a shame.
Oh fogot you r wonderful GST tax? I heard several of the Hams i talk with complain about that.
After many months of chasing the intermitent P 0401 I finally got a hard code on "KOER P 1408". And after three levels into the troubleshooting it got to the test He 74 from the Ford manual. Used PID DPFEGR to watch the voltage and apply vaccum to the "REF" port. Anyhow it started causing error codes 6 months before the DPFE finally just died last week. Thank goodness for Alex's OBD II software, an old laptop and the guys on this CEG site.
Goodluck
