Anyone had episodes of stalling at highway speeds?
My ?96 Mystique has done this five times in rush our traffic. The car will not start until it has set for about 15 minutes. Then it will run for a little while then stall again. The dealership is baffled... The car is equipped with the 170 hp Duratec 2.5L V-6, 4 speed auto trans. It has been a fantastic car up until it turned over 53,000 miles this year. I just paid the damn thing off and received the title in the mail a week before the car decided to stop running.

Dealership has replaced something to do with the timing, the Crank Shaft Sensor (twice), Wiring Harness, Fuel Pump, Fuel Filter, DPSE Fuel Sensor and the Max Air Flow Sensor. I drove it to work and back home on a Friday and put 168 miles on it over the weekend. The car was running great! Monday I did my normal routine and drove to Dallas when water pump had gone out. Replaced the water pump, the seal, thermostat and gasket.

Now I am paranoid to drive it ? in fear something else is about to go. Should I stop the worrying? I really like the car... I would hate to have to go get into a new payment at this time...

Welcome to the CEG board! 53K miles is a "young" contique, and your stalling problem is not a common one from what I've seen/heard. There was a recall on the wiring harness so hopefully this (and/or the other stuff) corrected that problem. The original waterpump frequently dies at around 60K, so welcome to the club frown Keep the engine full of clean 5w30 oil and change the tranny fluid every 30K and your car should be good for a long, long time. Plugs and wires are usually good for 60-80K. EGR passage cleaning can revive some lost pep around that time also. Check for catalytic converter recalls before the emissions warranty runs out. (80K miles) Mine's at 111K and running stronger than ever and not burning a drop of oil. I'm sure I'll get 200K+ out of this car! cool

now is probably a better time to buy that you're likely to see for the next decade... HIGH incentives and LOW interest rates.

But, about your car...

if it is still stalling, I would really think about moving to something else... but what else is the question... the Focus has a terrible reliability record... and who wants to drive a Taurus?

if they have actually fixed that problem, you should keep the car with the understanding that every once in awhile you will encounter surprises. Perhaps you should up your budget on preventive maintenance... if you replace things before they break, it might cost less (replacing an almost worn out pad is cheaper than a TOTALLY worn out pad AND it's rotor) and is more convenient...

I think the water pump will always be a problem for our cars. Mine was replaced due to a recall about a year or two ago.

Mine is a '98 Zetec auto with 50,050 miles on it... yay, I reached the halfway milestone!

Some of these cars have been noted to drive for a high number of miles... someone on this forum had 170,000 miles I believe...

I am a college student, which means that I will be driving this car for the rest of my life, haha. mad I don't know when I will be able to buy a new car. But, for now I have to make sure this one will run R-E-L-I-A-B-L-Y for the entire time I need it, probably well over 100K.

That's my seven scents. Oh wait, cents, I mean, cents!

Hey guys - thanks for the pointers. I'm no motor head but I do take the car in every 3,000 miles to have the oil changed and I have had the trans fluid changed twice now. I go by the book when it comes to preventive maintenance. This is my work car and I never drive it hard. By the way, when I got the recall for the wiring harness, the Lincoln Mercury Dealership said there was nothing wrong with mine and did not replace it. The Ford Dealership I now use has replaced it and it hasn't stalled since. I had to drive a Focus while mine was out sick... what a peice a crap these cars are. My '96 Mystique was like getting into a Continental after driving that thing! I need to get atleast a couple more years out of this car... I am looking at a new Millinea, the Lincoln LS, or the new X-Type... it depends on my cash flow when I go to buy. Tell me more about the EGR passage cleaning... and what I need to do to revive some lost pep it used to have.

Thanks again...

Hmmm...might want to look into the PATS (Passive Anti Theft System). It might be having a problem receiving a signal from your key, thus cutting the ignition.

Just a thought.
