Still having the CEL blues. One week off, one week on. I went to Autozone and bought an OBDII scanner for the 1998 Contour, Duratech, ATX. To my surprise I'm getting both the P0171 and P0172 codes--bank 1 too lean, bank 1 too rich. I would have expected one or the other as a MIL code. But both? I was hoping for a specific code relating to an O2 sensor or EGR.
Anyone suspect why the two codes?
Also, what is the best suspect for the problem--O2, EGR, or maybe fuel system?
If it were the fuel system, would it not have some type of driveability issue other than an occasional rough idle?

Just for the heck of it, I cleared the codes. Today on the way back from work, the CEL went off again. Now it reads P0171, system too lean, bank 1 and P0174, system too lean bank 2.
And now the tranny is shifing rough and it's picking up a P1744, Torque converter clutch solenoid circuit performance. Is this serious enough that it will require a new tranny?
I really wanted to keep this for my stepson but I'm beginning to think it's not worth it. Any ideas on what the problem is?

It sounds like your upstream O2 sensors may be going as I believe these are usually the first to go. Seems like 60K miles or so is typical for them to start dying. You could replace both of these yourself for under $120. I think the 1744 code may indicate a problem locking up the converter for 0 slip. If you haven't changed/flushed the fluid, it wouldn't hurt to see if this makes a difference. (I'll assume the fluid level is OK) Also check and re-seat the electrical connectors going to the transmission. The FAQ page lists 1744 as "Torque Converter Clutch System Stuck in Off Position." Should be driveable, but will probably get poor mileage. Don't know if it will hurt anything.

Thanks for the reply! I did recently have the fluid flushed in the tranny. I'll check the connections to see if that could be the problem. It seems like the tranny will start shifting hard 1st to 2nd after alot of stop and go traffic. One time it did this and i stopped to fill up with gas and after it started shifting normally. Maybe that was enough time for it to cool down. If it's not an electrical problem, what are the chances that the repair will require extensive work or replacement of the tranny?
I have replaced the PCV valve and checked for vac leaks--none found. It will idle rough at times, so I may replace or clean the IAC. But I don't think the IAC would cause the diagnostic codes that it's showing for the lean condition. Would the EGR cause them? It just seems that both 02 sensors wouldn't go at the same time.

CWDJR,
Look under you battery/air box at the condition of the harness that plugs onto the top of the tranny. Look for naked wires right at the plug. I bought an 95 Mystique that had the wiring harness problems BAD! It caused the tranny to go out. I replaced the entire harness while the tranny was out. I found mutiple naked wires EVERYWHERE.
Good luck Terry Loveless
