I have been having very bad mileage lately about 16-max 18 mpg with mixed city/highway using 93 and 87 octanes, I have new plugs, autolites double platinum (changed from bosh platinum +2 with 3k but the same mileage), new fuel filter, recently cleaned EGR passages and TB, could it be then because a plugged precat?, any other ideas for bad mileage?,

Could be a precat, a bad o2 sensor messing with your air fuel ratio....then again youd be pulling a CEL . And there was no word of a CEL in your post...make sure yous spark pulg wires are good...could also be some folwed spark pulgs....start with the simp things, like what you changed...then go from there.

My city milage went from 18 to 21.5 after I gutted the precats.

Aren't there codes that get stored on occasion that do not throw a CEL ??

Yes...but there very unlikly, but it is possible. The only one I know of is if your fuel level sensor is bad. See the way I undersatnd is that all the codes that pose a problem with the driveability of the car will throw CEl's, including some transmission problems.
But when it comes to air/fuel and gas mileage, it may not throw a CEl, like with fowled spark plugs, but i believe bad wires might throw a CEL.
BUt if it's a precat it would mostlikly throw a CEL.

In fact I had two consecutive CELs 6 months ago, bad o2 sensor, chagned both upstream and no CEL neither codes in the memory, I use to check it often with the ODB explorer, When i checked the bosh after 3k miles they were like new, I'll check the autolites in the weekend.

One thing that you did not mention was your air filter. Seems like one of the more obvious things, but easily over looked.
I was getting about 21-24 mpg on a good day and the same as you on a bad day before installing my BAT intake and now (as long it is cool outside and the engine temp doesn't rise too high in the city) I am getting around 26-28 mpg and I know that I have a plugged bank 1 precat. Will gut them when it stops raining long enough for the ground to dry up a little.

Originally it was the cost. But now that my Contour has been running alot better without them, ie more pep. I would opt to gut the precats even if it costs more than replacing them.
