Yes, but mask the following areas:
1) v-belt ribs
2) the bolt & washer surface (can screw up your bolt torque).
3) inside diameter where it mounts on the nose of the crankshaft.
4) outside diameter where the front seal runs.

Everything else should be fine. IMHO, painting them is a good idea because it doesn't take long for them to start rusting up and get ugly looking.
