The reward for coming to work in the middle of the snowstorm was breaking my damn ignition key...... I didn't break it in the lock, it just broke after I hit it on something.

What do I need to bring to the dealers to get a replacement ?? Title ? Registration ? Hopefully not the car itself ?

TIA .... Mark

Bring something with your name and the vin #

Like your Drivers L and the title?
They should be able to cut you a key right there.

A PATS system requires other working keys, one for early systems and two or three for later systems. Otherwise they will need to hook the car up to their computer to add new keys. If this is the case, be sure to get adequate spares at that time.

I called the dealer this morning. Looks like I have to have it towed in for them to program the new keys. Bleh.

Duratec cars with the Pats system can be stolen like any other car. The Pats thing is a signal. Repo men pick the ignition turn it to on and then use a generator that will make a bunch of signals, when the red light goes on then they know that the signal generated matches, and they turn the lock pick to start and take the car. I had to have the Ford dealer do this on my Expedition once, it is rather interesting to watch. The repo man can also just tow the car on a flatbed.

STOP!!!
Maybe you don't have to tow it.
Do you have to key "code" or key cutting indentations #s written down? do you have another key?
FORD WILL HAVE YOUR KEYS #s From your VIN # and a computer check I believe Get the cheap blank cut
Anyway, if you have the other part, get a cheap Ford key non-pats and just keep the old key fob on your keychain... it will work the PATS
If you got no key at all you are in for a new ig/lock set for several hundred installed.
EVERYONE: you can find out the key cutting code for your locks/keys get it, save it!!! with no key you can get a new key cut by the numbers at a dealer or a car lock place.
If you got PATS, you will need your fob around. And that none PATS key can open doors, trunk...
I have a non PATS key cuts for $3 just in case I lock myself out of the car with the keys inside
