96 2.5L Dura with 75k miles Ford was kind enough to install a new plastic pump, replace both head gaskets, new thermostat, flush etc. etc for the previous owner of my Contour. Gee, it only cost him a few thousand, and guess what the Ford dealer installed a brand new PLASTIC impeller for a repeat performance. From this site I heard of all the problems with the plastic unit so I purchased a steel one yesterday from NAPA, so as NOT to repeat the previous owners problems. Its NAPA part # DPW125-1910 and is NEW not rebuilt. This is the GMB unit made in Japan, sold by NAPA as a DURA PRO Model, my cost $56.09, time to install less than 2 hours, very very easy, and I am an office guy into computers more than mechanics. NAPA shows the part on their web site for $50.99, but that price varies based on where you are in the country. I am from Canada, but had to drive to Bellingham WA to get mine(26 miles), as the Canadian division of NAPA sells only the plastic unit. Now that I have the steel impeller, I don't worry about holding 1st gear to the red line. Another trick I leant on this site is to add oil to the bottom of the M in MAX, to help the oil stavation problem with these motors. If anyone wants a near new (white)plastic impeller pump, I'll ship it UPS air overnight for $40.00 includes the freight.

All these folks replacing waterpumps, I just ordered one I like your list of cars. I had a 66 Nova when I was 16, but had no money to do anything with it. Now, I'd like to find one and restore it, with some wicked, modern computer controlled small block Chebby engine TB

I just replaced mine with a plastic unit, I looked everywhere for the metal one and had no luck. After I installed it I read a few things about the metal impellers might not be groved enough and not moving enough water?
They said their cars seemed to be hotter temp wise?
I still wish I would have checked napa, I didn't since they were on the other side of town.
Oh well!

Recently replaced mine w/ the metal WP. No change in temp for me.
The metal WPs that I have seen do not include the housing. Terry Haines (I think) pointed out that if replacing the WP, but not the housing, the stainless steel shroud inside the pump housing needs to be inspected. Sometimes when the pump fails it damages this part, increasing the clearances (sometimes dramatically) and reducing the ability of the WP to pump.
Most of the plastic WP's come with the housing, so this is not a problem.
The SS shroud on mine was undamaged, and the pump works fine.

Dear Dealer 502, I have a good guess where those plastic pieces of the pump SHOULD go, and so do countless others who have spent thousands on motor replacements. I thing you have to ask the ENGINE EAR who designed the pump where they think the little bits went. The last time I mixed hot water and paper together I made a real nice paperMache donkey, maybe the Xss is still in the motor somewhere.

Mine just arrived via UPS. New Napa waterpump, new thermostat with rubber seal, new waterpump belt.
I figure if I'm proactively replacing it, I won't ahve as much to worry about concerning the SS shroud.
Now, for a nice weekend when I'm not on call.

Oh well! I changed mine to the metal pump about 3 months ago. Temp was running at N or O before and had been since last May. I was concerned about the fluctuation in temp change and decided to change thw pump. I changed the t/stat at the same time to a Ford OEM. Temp now runs at R or M. I prefer it that way, as I believe that the guage is (or at least should be) set up to read in the middle of the range when all is well. I may be wrong in my thinking but I feel happier this way.
