Got a bulge in the sidewall of one tyre. They are 205/50 r17's. What causes this to happen, and can the tyre be repaired? These tyres cost UK£140 each which I don't have. Can't just fit the spare because I only got a spacesaver spare tyre that has a 50mph limit on it. Plus its not an alloy wheel, its a steel wheel which would make the car look crap.

You will need a new tire. It will only be a matter of time before the tire will rupture. If you do drive on it, definitely do not drive fast...

Check the warranty on your tires. Many have a road hazard warranty that will prorate your benefit based on mileage. Cheaper than just buying new tires.

I'm no expert by any means, but I think you should put on the spare and replace the f'd up tire ASAP. I'm fairly certain that sidewall damage of any kind can't be repaired and this bulge is definitely a critical weak spot that is going to fail disastrously one of these days. The usual cause is an open splice in a body ply. Where there should be some overlap between the plies, there isn't any where you see the bulge. Though it may not look cool to roll around on the donut, you might save yourself from having to replace your 17" wheel when the tire does finally blow. With such expensive tires, you may want to look to see if there is a warranty against defects like this. However, it may be tough to prove this wasn't the result of hitting a pothole or some such thing.

A bulge in the side of a tire is usually due to damage inside the tire. The reason you see the bulge is probably due to damage to the cord structure, but the air tight liner is still holding air, and bulging.
Some tires bulge naturally, but if you don't see them on all of the tires, then there is probably an issue with the tire.
I've seen some inexpensive tires that bulge where the tire is joined together. (Look inside some tires and you can see where they are spliced together.
Is is possible that it is a manufacturers defect? Sure, but it is also possible that you damaged the tire by hitting a curb or pothole. However, if the tire has a manufacturers defect, they should replace the tire at a minimum at a prorated cost (you only pay for the treadwear you used)

Nope. Specifically not covered. Mom's Focus had this problem, and she had to buy a new tire. Swears to me that she never hit a curb or anything else like that.
