parked the car right out of a restaurant and came back to find a foot-long crack on the outer layer of glass lying at the driver side lower corner streching toward the center of the windshield. There is absolutely no any signs of the glass being hit, nor has the car being hit, but only clean, clear crack. Is it possible for a windshield to crack like this with no reason? Has anyone out there experienced this? How much $$$ will it cost? Does ford do any better than independ glass shop in replacing the windshield? I don't have glass insurance coverage but the car is under ESP Premium Care, can anyone tell the chance that I have it replaced under ESP? Thanks in advance!

If you have a tiny stone chip in the glass, the temperature change can cause a crack. I had a similar occurence. No visible damage, put the defroster on and a crack suddenly appeared, a slowly crawled across the windshield. There was a tiny (very tiny) little stone chip at the start of the crack, right at the base of the windshield.

It's usually a tiny chip near the edge of the glass that causes the crack. I had one go, replaced it, and a month later the new one cracked. Windshields are thinner than they used to be to reduce weight. Driving speeds are higher, so even small rocks strike with more force, and the roads are dirtier than ever. Around here, quoted prices for windshield replacement on the contour is around $225.00

You guys are all lucky.. I had a township truck throw stones up at me when he was driving like an A$$ and cracked mine.. cost me $500 for the glass and to have it put in.. And in Pa you can't go after township, county, or state vehicles for damage they do to yours unless the phsically hit you and you can prove neglence(sp?) mad

Many windsheilds get stress fractures. If it is hot and the air is way to cold, or vise versa, the windsheild will crack in the pressure points. My first windsheild cracked after I got done driving and it was 15 degrees. I had the heat cranked and when I parked it and came out it had mystriously rained and the windshield butsted. the first windshield costed 459 to replace.

the second windshield was replaced last week when a bullet when through it, that costed like 375.
