My '98 has footwell lights which are on a timer. The owner's manual says that the rocker switch on the overhead console has three positions. To the right - 12 sec timer. Middle - off. Left - on. On my car it's to the right - dome and footwell lights on timer, middle - footwell lights on timer (no dome) and left - dome on all the time. I've also got those swively reading lights to either side of the dome. So, right off the bat, the lights aren't working like the manual says they should AFAIK. The other problem is that I can't turn the timer off. I have to wait for the lights to go out before I can start the engine or they'll stay on until I shut the engine off! This also means I can't start the engine without all the doors being closed. Ordinarily I'd say the timer is stuck but it does shut the lights off - unless I start the engine. If I open the doors after the engine is running, the lights don't come on at all. Is this a problem or a feature? Karl

you need a central timer module. goes on the back of the fuse panel under the dash. its cheap and easy to replace.

First, it would appear dome light switch is ok, it does not control footwell lights, only the dome light. Presumably map lights are ok and manually turn on/off.
When driver's door is opened lights should come on and go off either 12 sec after door closing or when ignition key is turned to on position.
Do you get headlights-on and key-in warnings?
Do lights go on/off when each door is opened and closed (ignition off)? when ignition is on?
Several components involved; door jam switches/relay/key-in switch as well as timer module, too early in diagnosis to jump to latter being the problem.

88, I can't help you out, seems that they are right though, makes sense to me (the timer module is bad). Question I have to everyone in this post though... (sorry for barging in, just curious) is there any way possible to bypass the timer module so that my alarm can control the lights as opposed to the 12 second thing?

Yes, dome light switch and map light switches are okay. The headlights on and key-in warning works when engine is off. Lights go on and off when doors are opened/closed when engine is off. Not when engine is running. The timer works when engine is off. As long as I let the lights extiguish before starting the engine, they'll go out. If I start the engine or turn ignition to on position before they extinguish, they'll stay on until I shut off the engine or turn ignition off. The lights seem to only work on the 12 second delay. There doesn't seem to be any "instant off" when the doors are closed.

Unless you have had some recent repairs made to ignition switch or dash area which affected the wiring I too, like GregH above, can only conclude that some "weird" fault(s) in the timer module's internal ignition-on detection circuit is causing your symptoms. It's almost doing the reverse of what it should be doing.
This plastic rectangular 20 pin module plugs into interior fuse panel, visible above driver's left foot, and is held in place with plastic tabs. Gently pry tab away while wiggling module to unplug. Dealer only part.
p.s. Normal operation BTW has lights go on/off if you open/close door when ignition is on. If ignition is off, then delayed off will apply.

Thanks to you and GregH for your replies. I shall get a timer module and take it from there. I haven't had any work done on the car since I bought it a year ago Christmas. The courtesy lights have always worked this way. Thanks again. Karl

Yeah, I'm bringing this back from the dead to update and close it out. After replacing my battery the courtesy lights are now behaving like they're supposed to. Even my car alarm is working the way it's supposed to. Don't know why but I'm not looking a gift horse in the mouth. Karl
