Can anyone answer this: I have a Premium AM/FM in my 98 Tour. What is needed to upgrade to the Factory CD besides the CD unit itself? Yes I did a search.

You'll need a 'premium' amp bypass harness. Crutchfield has proved to be the most reliable source for the correct harness connectors for the Contour, but Circuit City and Best Buy sometimes provide the right stuff too.

yeah, my lil' brother drives a 00' tour and Best Buy was able to install his CD player which required the proper harness connecter. Best Buy had that on hand too. You'll probably want to upgrade the factory speakers if you haven't yet b/c their quality didn't seem that great with the CD player. I'm not a car stereo buff, but one can tell when a speaker just sounds bad.

Grunt, I think everyone else spoke before they read your question.
The factory CD should be a direct replacement for the other non-CD deck in your car. If I remember correctly, the factory CD had accomodations for both premium and non-premium wiring harnesses. I think you will be able to use your premium amp fine if you are installing someone's OEM CD player.

Doh! I missed the 'to' in 'upgrade to the Factory CD'. I couldn't imagine that anyone would actually want to do that , so I read right over it.

Right now that 50 sounds good for now just to listen to CD's

You could get a decent (read: much better than stock) entry-level aftermarket CD HU for 110-130. Yeah, it is more than 50, but you won't regret it.

In spite of all the criticsm of the factory HU, I found it to be a fine unit with decent sound quality. For $50, it's a nice upgrade over the cassette.
The BIGGEST complaint I had with the factory Premium CD was that they varied in their ability to play CD/r discs. The first one I had didn't play 'em very well, the one they put in under warranty (made in Mexico in 1996) played them great.
It would be interesting to see what one measured on a test bench for rms and distortion.
