For my bro's Cougar. 215/50/16. The Firestones suck for a replacement. He needs a little snow traction for the Detroit "winter." Their isn't crap in the Contour/Cougar 16" sizes. I was thinking Kumho 712's but they are more of a summer tire it looks. Anyone use these in the snow? If they are the same as the GTA's that would be fine. he could go to a 225 45 or 50 as well I guess. Not to much in the 45 profile. He's just looking to get himself from point A to point B.

All season tire here. Snow traction isn't a priority but it must have a descent amount. Don't want to go too skinney in the looks dept.

712's are for schidt in the snow, let alone on the dry! Those tires suck ballz. but you get what you pay for.

I here the Kumho MX's are heaps better, and their tread pattern is more "bloxcky, so perhaps they'll geive a better grip in the snow.

Even though Detroit winters can be considered mild, go with an all-season or winter tire on a second set of rims. Easiest and most cost effective way to go -

The big thing with summer tires like Kumho's 712s and MXs, BFG KDW's, Falken Azenis, etc, etc is that they are SUMMER tires - the tread pattern/depth doesn't do anything for removing snow/slush, the large blocks of tread make it even slicker on ice, and the compound was designed for warmer weather. Summer tires are really only good until about 50 degrees, around which point performance deminishes greatly.

Best thing to do is find some really cool 17/18/19 inch wheels, put some nice summer tires on those and then put winter/all season tires on your 16's. Then you get the cool wheels for 9 months and the 'point A to point B' wheel for 3.

He doesn't want to deal with 2 sets. He doesn't drive it hard and isn't too much of a car enthusiast. He wants cost effective and 2 sets is not unless you race/drive it hard in the summer. I think I'll steer to the VR4's.

Not really. You are assuming that everyone wants better traction in the summer. What about people who want better traction in the winter? You cannot run winter tires year round, especially when you do not a lot of eway driving.

I agree with Roger. Todd, you know how I drive and have seen my tires. Anyone who says they "NEED" snow specific tires is either a moron or doesn't know what need means.
At any rate, is he still looking to sell that thing? Tera may need a vehicle soon, and I don't think she can afford the Murano!
