It appears Tire Rack is offering free shipping, including to Canada! (Big savings)

Check it out. Their home page doesn't say anything, but when you fill out an order, UPS Standard shipping is $0.

I was surfing around on vwvortex.com and found this out.

Today it works properly (shipping is not free). Boo hoo, shoulda ordered last night!

In any case, I ordered a set of Yokohama AVS ES100, size 225/50WR16. Hopefully they'll arrive in time for the weekend!

Cheap! Paid $81 ea plus $70 shipping UPS Standard to Canada.

Cheap because I am (mortgage comes first, investments come second, car is a distant third).

I'm assuming the 225s will fit. Art has them (see his sig?) and I rarely have back seat passengers, and my car's not lowered.

The section width is not as wide as other 225/50/16s, so I'm hoping I'll be fine. I'd say they're a notch down from the SZ50 EP, and the treadwear is worse too (280 vs 340) but it still has AA traction for good wet performance and I really need something that rides better than the KDWs.

Will publish a full report when I get them mounted.

The 225/50-16 ES100's are awsome tires for the $$$'s and fit w/o any problems on the stock suspension and rims.

Good to know, thanks Art.

And I hope they are quiet and better riding than the KDW's?

Good wet traction?

lol so am I and that is why I drive an SVT vs a BMW etc. That is a real good price vs the $250+ CAN I shelled out for the KDW's. I am with you on the harsh ride of the KDW's, especially when they are more than 50% worn. I run em at 30 -32 psi and that makes them a little more civilized.

You're so right about the tire pressure. Now that my KDWs are down to about 2/16", I run them at 32 and it's tolerable, except when it's cold out. Also, the noise is much worse than when the tires were new. If I test drove a car this loud, I may not have ever bought it.

KDW = flintstone rock hard tires, and just as noisy.

I haven't had a chance to put them to their limits in the wet...yet, but for regular commuting + some spirited driving (in the wet) they're great...and much more quiet than the KDW's!
