how long does it take you guys? i live in an apartment building so i cant leave the engine running while i get ready, but i usually reserve ~10 minutes in the morning to warm it up (for the needle to hit the normal zone). is this average? 10 minutes? the focus i rented in nevada took 4 to get into the MIDDLe of normal....

I remember someone posting a similar question on warming up the car. I.i.r.c., most people said warm up the car for a minute or less, then drive it easy until fully warmed. John

I tend to let it warm up for about 5min. then i begin to drive slow and easy till the car is fullyu warm...For some reason in my area we have had some really cold temps which are not normal(its been below freezing at night for a week stright)and so I don;t drive right away. What it comes down to is personaly opinion and logic...True most people who go to work have little or no tim to warm up there cars properly...Id say continue giveing your self 10 min for warm up.

If I let my SVT just sit and idle it takes about 10 minutes before it gets to normal operating temp. For the well being of the car, that is unnecessary though. Just 30 seconds then drive away, which is what I usually do. But for the well being of YOU, after about 5 minutes it should be blowing warm air out the vents...

I usually let it warm up for about a minute or two, until the RPMs idle in the 700-800 range.

yeah i see where this guy is coming from. i let mine warm up for about 1 and 1/2 mins, then drive off.. i dont have the luxury of a garage, so i have to sit in the car and wait, and this cuts into my commute time..


only problem is when i hit the main road, i have to blast at full throttle to merge with traffic, as my parking lot opens onto a busy street... so on the mornings when im pressed for time, i'm hittin the gas and praying i dont bust something at the same time. ..

I normally just start and go. My driveway is about 500 feet, which means I'm going really slow for about 1 minute, before I get onto the public road, which still has a speed limit of 45 mph.

cool... basically answered my concerns about the time i should let it idle. but is 10 mins too long for the engine to be taking to warm up just to graze the normal zone?

10 minutes does not seem too long if you are warming up during idle. That is why manufacturers recommend that you warm it up while driving carefully.
After start up you only have to wait until the idle levels off, whether it takes 10 seconds or a minute. This way the engine reaches operating temperature much faster than letting it idle, and there is less oil contamination.
