I have a 00 v6 duratec se atx 30K miles. I have no idea what this sounded like but I believe it is my engine pinging. I use chevron 87. Well my care just developed a very slight rattling noise as I give additional gas while cruising. Could hardly hear it, needed to turn vent off and radio. Sounded like rocks in a can. While free reving in park the sound is not there. I tried flooring it while cruising I couldn't hear it. I just hear it when I lightly give it more gas while cruising.
Please help. Read somewhere it could be MAF sensor.
Thanks, Albert

Clean the MAF and both intakes.

Above stuff + run a few bottles of injector cleaner in your next tank of gas you buy somewhere else. I run 87 in my V6 and only get occasional pinging on very hot days under very heavy loads. The EGR ports could be very clogged ($5) or you may need to overhaul the intake and injector harness ($60). http://www.contour.org/mods/mods.cgi?s=howto&display=intake-overhaul Any CELs?

No CELs. Just sounds like slight static around 2500-3000 rpm, then it either goes away or the sound of the engine drowns it out. It sounds normal when I put it a WOT. Well I got some electrical parts cleaner and filled it with 92 and 1 bottle of chevron fuel system cleaner.
I have no idea what pinging/knocking sounds like. I know the theory behind what happens and why, but I have NO IDEA what is sounds like. Please point me in the direction of enlightenment!
Thanks fellas!

If it goes away with higher octane fuel then it is an engine ping. If it doesn't, you may need to look elsewhere. I suspect it is just pinging. Sometimes winter fuel on a warm day will do this even if everything else is OK. If it is a ping, then do clean the injectors and the throttle body for certain. Cleaning the rest of the intake cannot hurt. Cleaning the EGR passages may help as well.
For what it is worth, I also usually use Chevron 87 in my car with no problem. My car does call for 91 Octane since it is an SVT, but as long as everything is clean, the 87 Octane works fine. I have only heard my car ping twice, both times it was on a hot winter day. We do have a few of those in southern California.

I dumped in a bottle of chevron fuel system cleaner and filled the tank with 92 octane mixed with the 87 octance already in there 1/2 and 1/2.
I'm gonna try the MAF cleaning.. Bought me a bottle of electrical parts cleaner. Oh forgot to tell you that I might have over oiled my K&N. I hope cleaning it this weekend solves it!
I still hear this sort of static, slight rattling when the car is in OD 4th and I give it some gas while cruising. Happens around 2-3k rpms. Dunno could be a loose heat shield?? But only seems to occur under light load in the above rpm range. When it decides to downshift all I hear is the rush of air going into the engine.
----------------------------- Still have no idea what pinging sound likes.. Anyone what to educate me? Know the theory but never actually heard it?
You guys/gals are great!

After 1 week, 1 tank of gas, 1 fuel system cleaner it is still there.
I guess I'll try 1 bottle of Penzoil Regain? before I take it to the dealer.
With the various squeaks, rattles, and pinging this car is begining to annoy me.
Thanks, Albert
