My car has been shaking when I apply the brake 25mph or faster. Upon a visual inspection the brakes the only thing I can see is a small "~2cm" chip on the edge of the passanger side inner disk. I would not think that this little chip would affect the brake. Am I right? Also is there any reason new brake pads could cause this problem? Thanks

New brake pads sounds like some recent brake work? The rotors should be resurfaced when the pads are replaced. Most tour rotors are too far worn to resurface, so replacement is the only option. The rotors probably need to be turned or replaced. If the "chip" is not on the surface touching the pads, it wont cause the shaking you described. If the brake mechanic used an impact wrench and over tightened your wheel lugs, the rotors could have warped. Brand new pads usually get stronger after a few drives, but should stop smoothly. You can check the rear brakes by doing a few test stops using just the hand brake.

Is the chip on the brake contact surface or the outer edge? If the the disk rotor surface is not completely smooth, warped or not seated properly the brake pedal will pulsate/shake.
New pads on rotors with the above problems may aggrevate the shaking.
Try having the rotors resurfaced by a competent shop. They can also tell you if you have enough "meat" remaining on the rotor to safely resurface.

Thanks for your thoughts guys.. Yes the brakes were all done about a month ago. The rotors and drums were all resurfaced. Also, the problem is in the front wheels, as the E-brake test brings the car to a smooth stop. When you refer to "warped" rotors are you talking about the surface the pad hits, or a physical bend in the rotors... if a bend, should I be able to tell by looking?

you really just need to replace your rotors, call around as the prices vary a large amount. if your new pads are undamaged by the warped rotors, just use them on the new pads but heck, pads are cheap so just get some new lifetime warranty pads and keep the reciept. :p smile

The amount of warpage that causes the brakes to shudder is too small to observe with the naked eye. It only takes about .006" to cause a shake. A dial indicator is needed to measure the run out.

Ok...What's a reasonable price for Replacement Rotors...Nothing fancy, just a factory replacement.
