Why is it in AZ I can only find 91 octane? When I was in PA I always put 93 or 94 in my cars. Is this a law or what? I've asked a lot of people who are from here and noone can tell me why. Any of you CEG'ers know why?

I'm guessing it has something to do with the altitude. Don't quote me on that though.

The EPA. I can direct you to stations that carry higher octane to blend the 91 if you are looking. Right now I'm running half 91 and half 101.

i never knew there was anything higher...all they have here is 87 89 91

just a question but 91 octane gas last longer than 87 or 89 right??? as far as miles per gallon goes...i hope i'm not buying higher gas when I don't need to

Actually, I've done comparisons in my Zetec and have noticed very little difference in MPG. However, higher octanes burn cleaner, so you really aren't harming anything by running higher than you should, but as long as you buy a decent brand like Chevron you can get away with running 87 all the time.

I recently inspected my fuel pump after over 100k hard miles and not always using the best gas around and it looked fine.

I know up here in Denver I get better Gas mileage and performance from 91 than 87 in my Mustang... but I guess that's really comparing Apples to Oranges in this case.. I've never tried putting anything less that 91 in the Tour.. so I really don't know what 87 would do for me... OK I'll shut up know...

Jigga and I are speaking of Zetecs. CSVTs are designed for premium - the Zetec isn't. As a result, it seems the engine doesn't really compensate performance-wise for higher octane. As I said already, MPG improves, but not enough to make it worthy from a $$ standpoint

What year Mustang? I'd guess that older cars with less sensors, computers, etc. would react better simply because they combust fuel and that's it - they don't need to monitor it, smell it, run scientific experiments on it, etc.
