Why is it a Mazda transmission? It was built by Ford in their Ohio Transmission plant.

Where a product is built and where it was engineered & designed are often two very different things. Mazda had engineering responsibility for the original 2001 Escape/Tribute, for example, but that responsibility has since gone back to Ford.
In any case, I thought the CD4E came into being from Ford of Europe for the Mondeo program before Ford and Mazda started any serious parts sharing.
The 4-cyl 626 has the CD4E, the 6-cyl has the G4E2 ATX. I KNOW the G4E2 is a Mazda-proprietary design. Yes, Mazda will give the CD4E trans its own internal designation, but that does not necessarily mean it was designed by them. Ford undoubtedly has its own designation for the Nissan engine in its Villager minivan.

And BMWs Z-models and X-5 SUVs are made in Spartanburg, SC; Mercedes M-class SUVs are made in Alabama.

Hi All,
I just want to say that my flashing O/D light is gone. I replaced the Level Position Sensor mentioned on the Haynes book. The sale person in Autozone said the common name for it is "Neutral Safty Switch". The replacement procedure is very simple and it is covered in the Haynes book. The one I bought is an OEM part by Wells ($70), it comes in black and it is a little bit smaller than the old one. However, there is Ford logo on the plastic casting. I drove my 2.0L 4cycl contour for 2hrs with 120 miles and no blinking O/D light. Next, maybe the water pump.
