Carb cleaner does not work very well on hardened deposits.

Chlorinated solvents do OK if you let it soak.

Scrape it before you try cleaners. Use brass and wood around the valve pintle and seat so you don't damage it.

If you have a small brass wire wheel like for a dremel tool it will come out clean and shiny.

I just saw that product at my local Walmart. I bought the B12 Chemtool carb cleaner since it listed xylene (which a few people have raved about) as one of the chemicals.

You might also want to use a brush with metallic bristles, such as a gun cleaning brush.

FYI: I cleaned mine, but it didn't help. It seems that mine was clogged up where I couldn't get to it (in the elbow area). When you take off the EGR, apply vacuum to it (around 10 in HG) in order to open up the diaphragm, and then (in a dark area) shine a flashlight in one end. If light doesn't come out the other end, then you will probably need to replace it.

Just wondering, why are you cleaning your EGR?

I went to auto Zone and Had my Tour hooked up to the Computer . cant remeber the code off hand ...May have been # 0420 . or 0410 ..But anyways ...Came back saying That my EGR was the cause of my CEL Luminating .
I have already Screwed myself ..I belive the 10 milimeter socket I used was cheap enough to strip the head off one of the 2 bolts .. not sure what to do now?? ..may have turned a 2 dollar job into a 350 dollar job

Writing the code down is a good way to keep from forgetting it.

If it was P0401 you may just need to clean the EGR passages behind the throttle body.

Get better sockets, the bolts can be replaced but getting out damaged ones is @#$*&$#!!!!

My pal's Legend just failed smog because of clogged EGR. We went to the local Chevy dealer to buy this GM carbon remover. Gawd it was a strong stuff.... eveything oozed out after soaking overnight plus a little poking around with a rifle cleaning kit.
