We blew our engine yesterday. It was a '99 Duratec with 23k miles on it. The dealership says that the side of the oil filter was blown out and that it puked all of the oil. The pistons sort of melted after that happened. They're unsure of whether the oil filter failed or if some pressure release valve inside the engine malfunctioned. Since the oil filter was a Ford part, they're "happily" replacing the engine for free. Anyone else out there know of similar occurances?

eek That sucks. Glad I didn't put a Motorcraft on mom's Focus today. Of course, my SVT gets K&N oil filters.

Gee, same thing happened to me in a past Ford. They were very cool about replacement, too. Poor car. I think they overtightened the filter in my case. Nice to get a fresh engine, though.


98 CSVT, basic mod's, my slowest car yet but still faster than the wife's Talon Tsi AWD. Not by much, though. Now if I could get the back wheels to do something....

When the oil filter gets blown off, the usual culprit is the pressure relief valve in the oil pump. The valve can get stuck closed and bleed off excess oil pressure. The much higher than normal pressure leaves the pump and goes straight to the oil filter and blows it right off.

This problem is especially aggravated in cold climates when starting up with cold, thick oil. This has been a problem with 1999 Duratech motors.

Driver3000, you must have gotten an oil light when the filter blew off...did you not shut the motor down?

Procyon - Thanks for you insight on the valve. The conditions were just as you described - cold morning, cold engine, thick oil. My wife was driving the kids to school when it happened. She did say that "some light came on just before the car quit working". It's a safe bet that it was the oil light. I was already at work when she called to give me the "good" news and ask what to do now. FYI, Ford Roadside assistance was great. It's the second time in two years that we needed them, though. I'm beginning to wonder about the longer term reliability of my car and am very nervous about what life will be like without a warranty on this car (the warranty is up in October). It's too bad because I love the car.

Notice I said the 1999 Duratechs had this oil problem. The problem was fixed with the newer design oil pumps. i.e. this problem shouln't repeat itself with the replacement motor.

Procyon, what are the changes in the oil pump 99 & earlier vs 00 & up? Did they up flow capacity?

FYI, your new motor will have a minimum warranty of 12 months/12,000 miles from date of installation.
