I'm very seriously considering moving to the Los Angeles area in the next 1-3 months, and am looking for suggestions on where exactly to move. I need to be relatively close to LA. I don't want to be in the valley, the ghetto, a high-crime area, etc. And I'd need to be able to find a 2-bedroom place for around $1100 or less. The closer to the beach, the better.

Any suggestions? Thanks for the help!

p.s. If you're in IT and can hook a brother up with a job, even better.

How much of a commute are you looking for? and what part of LA is the job at? Calabasas was pretty nice when I used to live there... Its not to far from LA and just a very short drive to malibu and the beach. There is also Santa Monica, nice also, right on the beach, and close to LA. The close you get though, the worse the traffic situation!

I don't have a job yet, so it's hard to say.. But I want to be close to the nightlife and all.

A buddy of mine was in LA this weekend, said he stayed with a friend in Manhattan Beach, and it seemed like a good place. Reasonable prices, good location, etc. In all my times out there, I never came across this place, so I'm curious what some natives think of the place.

Santa Monica sounds like what you want... OR if you want the hottest college chicks on the planet, and lots of good bars and decent clubs (but rather alot further from LA) try Santa Barbara

Santa Monica is great, but I think you would have a hard time finding a decent two bedroom for the price range you mentioned. If you go a little outside of Santa Monica or on the outskirts, I think you would find what you're looking for. Close to the nightlife and not too far from IT companies

No IT work on Santa Barbara, lord knows I tried everywhere. I spent 1100 on a one bedroom in Irvine, I suspect Santa Monica would be pretty much the same. But it's a good place to live, nightlife is excelent, and not too far from where the jobs are. Or if you find a job in Orange County, check out Newport Beach. Right by the beach, prety cheap, and close to where the jobs are in South Orange County. (Irvine, Lake Forest, Tustin, Laguna Nigel, etc) I like the nightlife there, the clubs are not as big, and the girls are fantastic and rich.

Plastique is right, Calabasas is 15 min. from Pepperdine and the beaches at Malibu, 1/2 hour from Hollywood . It's in the mountains at the Woodland Hills end of a mini silicon valley that stretches up to Camarillo along the 101. Gorgeous, wealthy, semi-rural place to live right in LA - it's a unique area.

Amgen is a huge (their site is the size of a college campus) employer out here, and daily I pass places like Homestore, THQ (my kids test their games ), Digital Insight, Semtech, Spirent...

Oh yeah, every Wednesday night there's an IT get together at Spirent called VANTUG (Valley NT User Group - jeez, sounds like a bunch of addicts!) with different guest speakers on relevant IT topics. Should be a great spot to pick up a few tips while you nosh & network. On that page you'll see a link to Diane at ThorIT; she's VERY knowlegeable re. the local IT employment scene and should be able to help you quite a bit.

Let us know how it goes - and good luck!

Meanwhile here's some BOFH IT humor to cheer you up

im with proudsvt...orange county would be the way to go...l.a. is a shiz hole...the more time u spend in orange county the less u'll want to spend anywhere near l.a....even the 'slum' of irvine where i grew up is better than l.a....irvine is nice, newport beach will get u penis rodman as a neighbor and anything south of irvine is pretty expensive and more and more exclusive

any of those places will let u live roughly 35-40 mins south of l.a....great cars, great ass...lots of little pubs and hangouts...just becareful down in laguna beach...there's this club called the golden spike or something...all im sayin is guard your backdoor

oh on that drive to l.a. from o.c....that was the estimated time back in the 80's i think...now if u haul ass on an open freeway u can still do it...but the 405 isn't open very often...expect closer to an hour plus

Well I live in Hollywood and used to drive all over the L.A. area as an outside sales rep. So... I can tell you that calabasses is closer to 1 hour to 1 hour and 1 and 15 min. away from L.A.. Santa Monica is pretty much out of the question for the price range you are looking for and orange county is in realistic driving conditions 1+ hours from L.A.. I live about 2 miles from the center of the sunset strip which is the best party location out there as far as clubs and bars go. I would say look into to the Hollywood, hollywood hills areas. Or even West Hollywood but you gotta to watch your backside there. You shouldn't have a problem finding an apartment in that price range in those areas. The crime rate is down in these areas also. My place is in a nice area and close to everything that you would want. Although it is about 20 min to the beach. Check Rentimes.com for appartment availability and prices. Hope this helps.
