Hey Guys,

Simple question....

Can someone give me a how to on changing the air filter (regular filter, not the cabin one) in a '98 Contour SVT? The car is new to me and it is time to check on the air filter.

Thanks in advance.

smile

There are three clips on the filter housing. Just release them and pull up. The filter should slide out. Getting the housing back in place is a PITA. Scraped knuckles.

Thanks,

That is the part I was kinda worried about. I noticed the 3 clips for the release, but putting it back on looks like a chore. Any tips?????

When I first attempted to change the stock filter to a K&N repalcement, I broke the lower tab/insert portion of the filter housing and receiver assembly (airbox) trying to remove the filter by merely unlatching the front half of the airbox. One hundred and ninty dollars (and a new airbox AND MAF...Ford doesn't just sell the airbox assembly mad ) later I learned to loosen the hose clamp on the MAF at the plenum (rubber bellows/accordion looking thing)and gently remove the whole airbox without unlatching the two halves. Once removed, unlatch the two halves and change out the filter. Look at the lower portion of the airbox halves and you will see the cheap tab/insert set-up I am talking about.

I have included a diagram to clarify...

I hope this helps...welcome to the site!! laugh

I should show this to the Ford Service Tech that did not put my housing back together properly when they changed my air filter.

I know it is a tight fit, but I have been able to release the three clips and then carefully work the section apart to remove the entire cone housing. To reassemble, it helps to use a very light amount of silicon (spray or liquid, as in tire magic or detailers silicon) on the part that stays in the fender (inside, especially the lower part) and the outside part of the cone that goes into the fender piece. Apply the silicon gently with your finger, do not spray. Oxygen sensors do not like silicon so use just enough to help the parts slide together and no more.

I actually made a slit in the rubber intake boot to make it easier to install the airbox.
