96LX 24 Dura auto, If I accelerate hard in 1st anywhere past 4,500 and prior to a 1st 2nd shift let off the gas pedal, the tranny bangs really really hard into 2nd, and or 3rd. I have a Jeep Grand that does this as well but so slight you don't notice it much. The Tour concerns me because the bag seems so violent. When it bangs the rev's are usually down well under 2,000. If I let it shift at 6,000 all is ok, a normal 1st 2nd shift. Fluid is clean and up. Should I be concearned, the car has 70K miles.
Vehicles owned: 96 24Dura Tour = Corner Carver 68 Nova SS = 5.0 & Corvette Stomper 95 Grand Jeep = Grocery Wagon 97 4 Runner = Mountian Climber At 50 everyone needs more toys!!!

Your PCM has been taught bad lessons. Seriously, your computer is expecting you to jump on it and keep accelerating. To help the computer "unlearn" this shift pattern, reset the computer by either pulling the fuses, or diconnecting the battery cable for 15 mins.

I am having the same problem, and have contacted a friend at a local dealer. Ford put out a few TSB's on the problem. First was a reprogram of the PCM, which Ford says will cost .2 hours (about 12 minutes). The other concerned the ISS (Intermediate Shaft Sensor), which would need replacing. Mine is still being looked at, but I feel your pain on those hard 1-2 shifts!

I didn't know this was a problem. I thought that this was something normal. My car does this also, but I drive it really really really hard. Im surprised that it is still holding out how hard I am pushing it. I only have 46,xxx miles on it and it's a 95. This might explain why I get really lousy gas mileage. It must be running rich, But it excellerates great. Don't know if I want to change it. ~Robert~ robertjstevens@yahoo.com

Mine's always done that. It makes me cringe every time...
Synthetic ATF helped a little...

try a bottle of lubegard that you can get at your napa store. this stuff is great even if you have a great shifting transmission. makes it even smoother.

Lubegard is an ATF additive that helps the trans shift faster, smoother and run cooler. I'm using it now and seems to work pretty well. More info here: http://www.lubegard.com/automotive/trans_atf.html

Is there any advantage to using that if you already are running synthetic fluid?
