As a precaution, I replaced the water pump in my '96 SE at 60,000 miles about 3 years ago with a new Ford pump. The replacement pump had a plastic impeller too, but it was a different color than the original (one was black, the other was white - can't remember which was which), leading me to believe that Ford redesigned the plastic impeller material. I have 125,000 miles now with no problems.

My question is: should I replace the water pump again? Has anyone had the replacement Motorcraft water pump with the different color impeller break?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

I would replace it with a metal impeller pump just to be safe.

Your original would have been black, replacement white. Read this thread, Big Jim's post probably says the most with the least words:

Thanks for the replies. Sounds like a replacement metal pump is in order.
