How hard is it to replace the inner cv boot. I can see where the lube has spun out due to a tear in the boot. Its been torn for about a month now, Its been so damm cold I cant get my self out to fix it. Thanks for any insight!!

I'm not sure about doing just the boot as I had to replace the axle assembly. To make sure you have a good fitting replacement, you may want to get an OEM unit from the dealer or possibly NAPA. New clamps and CV joint grease would also be helpful for a good repair.

You might be able to get an aftermarket split-boot replacement installed by a local shop reasonably cheap (1/2hr), since it does not require drive axle removal (2hrs). Suggest you look into that ASAP, rather than wait for break in weather, since it's going to get worse before it gets better. Brrr!

so what is the standard procedure for this. Do you have to replace the whole drive shaft, or can you buy and replace just the boot?

The split boot might make a good temporary fix to get fresh lube in there and to keep it in and the dirt and grime out. That is if you are doing it yourself, it will limit the time you are outside.

But a traditional boot is the best repair, and will require practically removing the axle if not doing so completely for ease of working on it.

And if you are paying a shop, you might as well just pay once and have the boot or complete axle replaced.

I have done this only because I put holes in the inner drivers side boot while replacing the bearings. It is one tough job! I couldn't find a split boot, but ford sells a kit(about 100.00 bucks) and it includes not only the boot but various clips and the 2 clamps you will need. These 2 clamps each take a different type pliers to close them. It also includes 3 new bearings for on the 3 sectored gizmo that goes into the hub. Also you almost need to take the whole axle out and on a bench to do it right. You also need the Helms Ford book on Contour, chiltons and haines will lead you astray on this fix.

You can buy a rebuilt axle/cv assembly for about $60.
