My 1996 Duratec Mystique has had continuous IMRC problems ever since my Merc. dealer replaced this unit to kill off a CEL. The car ran like a rocket before and was returned a dog. Of course the dealer could not see / feel what I was talking about when I returned to the scene of the crime. The secondary runners would not open as they did before so the engine would not rev beyond 5000 rpm and was very flat in acceleration. I opened the secondary intake valve linkage by hand and found that a Stanley 2" "L" bracket can be wedged into the linkage directly under the main throttle body. This hold the secondaries open at 100% and allows the engine to once again scream to 6-7,000 RPMs with a dramatic , smooth power curve. Low end torque seems okay and the power sweet spot has returned beginning at 3,500 RPMs and up. I finally pulled the #4 and #11 fuses to re-program the main computer to the new air flow values. My car is once again a rocket and I do not have to purchase another IMRC for several hundred dollars. I can also remove the "L" bracket for dealership / valet parking to protection in one minute.

Can you take a picture of this L Bracket so I know what to look for when I go to Lowes or Home Depot? Or just tell me the part number for the Stanley piece...

The 90 degree , "L" bracket is a standard 2 inch piece with 4 holes drilled into it. I found mine in the basement!

Hmmm that might break it....forcing it open is a problem. For free, you could remove the whole assembly!

Pinning the secondaries is nothing new.
Simple way is a cable tie. Fast, cheap, effective way to TEST with...
BTW - You will now permanently throw a P1518 CEL and the PCM will cut timing & fuel... Disconnect the IMRC plug and it will get worse...
Next time you start the car look for it... It will be there...

My IMRC is not working and I do not have a CEL code so my cheap fix is ideal. The power has returned and I feel that the ignition and fuel are where they need to be.

The IMRC stuck open MIL may not illuminate right away, but it will if the linkage is stuck open for two full drive cycles IIRC. If it doesn't, you might want to check the wiring running to the IMRC as your problem source. If the IMRC monitoring circuit can't be completed, the ECU won't notice that they're pinned open, hence no MIL. BTW, the kick you feel around the same RPM isn't the same as when the IMRC's open... since the injector is in one port only, it normally gets a certain speed of air passing by it at lower RPMs which create the proper air/fuel mix. Pinning the secondaries "steals" some of that air into the secondary port (separate from the primary runner all the way into the cylinder), which slows the primary runner air and creates a poor burn mixture. Without a way to add more fuel pressure, longer pulse width, or higher speed air, what you're fealing at around 3500 RPMs is the air speed finally reaching the point where you're getting a good burn mixture as well as the timing bump from the ECU "expecting" the IMRC opening point.
