my 1996 contour, V6 2.5L is running badly. Rough idle/ stalling/ jumping idling rpm. When started cold runs like crap BIG TIME I have to play with the gas peddle just to keep it running, then after the engine warms up it can maintain a rough lower idle at traffic lights. it stays rough even on a long drive. It has 75,000 miles.
The code reader for the check engine light shows P0171,P0174 for bank 1 too lean and bank 2.
I tried some fuel injector cleaner with no success.

Any help/ideas appreciated
Jim

Possible cause would be defective vacuum lines.

Everytime I had lean bank 1 and 2 it was a dirty MAF. Tour 2 had rough idle a few times but no codes (it is OBD I) and it was an ignition problem every time. Bad coil pack once and 2 bad plug wires over the years. You will hear a misfire in the exhaust stream. Misfire usually will show up as rich, not lean. Like BW said, look for vacuum leaks too. Could be loose hose clamps, cracked vacuum lines, intake manifold or injector gaskets. Use the carb cleaner method of looking for leaks if you are careful. Spray it around the gaskets and see if the idle changes.

Vacuum leak or dirty MAF, glad we agree!

Check the hose from the intake to the PCV valve, and the fresh air tubes from the valve covers to the intake tube.
The other vacuum lines can leak too but they usually trigger other codes. Press down on the intake to see if you can make it smooth out.

If it runs better after you fix the lean condition but it still seems rough, plugs and wires should fix that.

How do you cure a dirty maf? what is the indication that your maf is dirty? Do you just replace the maf sensor?

I am pretty sure the MAF can be cleaned. Replacement is a little spendy. I checked fordpartsonline yesterday and a new MAF was $129 for my 1995 Ford Contour LC V6 2.5 auto tranny.

A dirty MAF can be identified by the type of jokes it tells.

Actually, dirt on the MAF causes a general lean condition.

Sometimes they also become s-l-o-w which causes a stumble.

A can of electrical cleaner spray aimed at the elements in the little hole (view from front) is often sufficent. Otherwise dismantle carefully and clean gently with alcohol on a cotton swab.
