95, zetec, mtx, 100 K miles. Vibration in the front of the car, mainly when accelerating or using the engine as a brake. When I really push it hard, it shakes like crazy in the 3k - 6 k range. Slight vibration below 3k, and almost none below 2k. If I gradually accelerate, I can drive at any rpm, with no vibration. If I rev the engine in neutral, no vibration.
When I give it anywhere close to WOT, in 2nd, 3rd, 4th gear, in the 3K-6k range, bad vibration in the steering wheel, floor pan, and dash. If I downshift, and use the engine as a brake, it vibrates for about 3 seconds, and then it is smooth.
Basically, it shakes when I'm accelerating, and it shakes when I'm using the engine as a brake. It's like it vibrates as the rpms increase, either from giving it gas or downshifting.
Struts, driveaxles, ball joints, front rotors, front and rear motor mounts, wheel bearings, tires, rims are basically new. So are the plugs, plug wires, fuel filter. I've cleaned the MAF, IAC, and IAT. The timing belt and serpentine belt appear to be good, just looking at them. Sure hope somebody out there has an idea of what's going on.

Here's a possible...yet probably not possible solution: Check your lug nuts on your tires. I had the same problem once...I thought the engine was going to explode...turns out the lug nuts on my wheels were a bit loose. If it's not that, it may be your clutch chattering because it's either warped or warn out.

Hope that's not the original timing belt, 60k is normal interval.

The lug nuts are torqued to 85. I've had the tires on and off many times, switching tires from the contour to the mystique, trying to isolate the problem. It still vibrates.
I don't know about the belts. I bought the car last year, with about 80K on it. I've not changed the belts, but I don't know the history. They look okay, but I've not checked for tension, other than pressing on the belts with my hand.
I just checked for clutch slippage. I can take off, from a stop, in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th, without any apparent clutch slippage. I obviously have to ease the clutch out in 3rd and 4th, otherwise the engine will die.
I'm considering the possibly of the vibration being clutch related, but I don't know how to check this out.

this is a way too long shot, but differential and/or tranny ? maybe diff. bearings ?
have no idea how to verify it though.
what happens if you accelerate then depress the clutch while leaving it in gear ?
keep us updated pls, this is getting interesting (fighting vibrarion issues myself too - but for me it should be just normal wear after 132K...)

I know you stated that you had checked the engine mounts and they were ok, but what about the tranny mounts.
One more suggestion...
Since your problems appear to be happening when the driveline is heavily loaded, I would stay in the driveline.
I agree that it might be a clutch problem with the slight chance of it being the tranny mounts. You might have to get the flywheel (faceplate) inspected for "checking". It would stand to reason if the only time it does this is unextreme loads (heavy acceleration and heavy engine braking) and not under normal use.

tiv... Yeah, I've wondered about the bearings...sure hope not...sounds expensive.. If I accelerate, then depress the clutch, while leaving it in gear, it's smooth....no unusual vibration.
unisys12... I may be using the wrong terminology for what I called the motor mounts. One that I replaced was the front, below the radiator. The other that I replaced was the rear, below the firewall. I think they are roll resistors.
Today I drove about 200 miles, and by the end of the day, the vibration was almost gone. Not totally gone, but much less vibration than yesterday. Blamed if I can figure it out.

Re-torque your lugnuts to 110 ft.pounds NOT 85 . Also are you tightening them in the right sequence??

The sequence I've used for tightening is 12 o'clock, 6 o'clock, 3 o'clock, 9 o'clock. I don't know if that's right or not.
The Ford Service Manual and Haynes manual both say 62 lbs torque, so I was afraid I already had it too tight. My local tire shop recommended 95 lbs. Do you think 110 is better?

The vibration is not as bad as it was. It's still there, but not as noticeable (unless I'm just getting used to it). It seems that if I run the dickens out of it, it runs smoother. I've driven several miles with the rpms between 4k and 6 k, occasionally taking it to redline. It seems that after these 'workouts' the vibration is minimal. ?????
