Pamalad798 is considering buying a '96 Countour and needs quick advice, she has posted this in the General Forum:

http://www.contour.org/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=general&Number=148166&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=31&fpart=1

Hope the bandwidth can handle the rush of replies from Eastern Canada.

That sounds like a great price depending on the KM. I don't believe that tranny problems are common. As horseydug said take it to an independant mechanic to have a look at it. If you are interested I have the very same car for sale with 121,000KM on it in great shape. It may be worth the hour drive for a comparison.

Pam,

Check your Private Messages.

My response was rather long, and everyone else here knows my horror story, so let me boil my recommendation down to two points:

1. For Christ's sake, no. Not that one. Not with 190,000km and a failing ATX. Not even for free.

2. Check out SVTCANUK's instead.

I have a 96 contour. There great cars, the only thing you have to watch out for is the transmission going again. The CD4E tranmission is a very weak and poorly built tranny

Well, I no longer carry a 4L jug of water with me, which is nice. As I told Pam in my PM, the Contiques are excellent driving cars. I miss the handling and the V6, but I knew I would.

BTW, the guys on the Subaru forum (almost bought a Subaru instead of the Matrix) were right about the Nokian Hakka 1's. Pretty amazing snow tires. Watched a car touch their brakes and go sliding off the road last Friday night. I stopped easily. Also passes the weekly hillclimb to my parents cottage with flying colours. Who needs AWD?
