Any ideas on what may be causing a strange humming noise in my 99 SVT contour w/ 70k miles. I thought it might be the power steering since the humming sounded very similar to the whine of the steering during full wheel turn. It was not the steering...It is progressively getting worse and more frequent. Used to happen when the car was first started now happens during a drive at all speeds although it is more constant at idle when there is a power draw such as the power steering or A/C - defrost. The sound is coming from around the battery compartment and I am wondering if it could be the battery. It is the original and I dont drive the car more then 2 or 3 times a month now(garage baby). I do start it every week for 20 minutes but last drive I turned on the a/c while cruising at 30 and the car stalled. Anyone think the humming noise has something to do with the battery and lack of power??? I have also noticed some corrosion on the + terminal since the professional installation of an after market stereo. I have since cleaned the corrosion and terminal. Any ideas on what could be causing the noise???

Alternator? Take it to Autozone and have them perform a charging system diagnostic. It's free. If you need a new alternator, buy it from them (new of course). Their alternators come with a lifetime warranty. When the new one dies, get another new one free of charge.

I had a humming noise once it would start and stop, but it was a loud whine with vibration at the air filter box turned out to be idler motor and car would jerk and stall under braking after about 30min driving. Stalling started a couple days after I herd the noise.
Just thought this may help your diagnosis.

More than likely is the moose. Open the air filter housing up and see if it gets louder.

It would probably be a good idea at that mileage to pull the intake manifolds and clean the IMRC butterflies, plenum passages, and EGR passages. Also clean the throttle body and either clean or get a new IAC (idle air control).
The IAC is responsible for the noise, but crud buildup contributes to it and hurts performance.
