This problem isn't serious but it is starting to annoy me. It only happens on real cold mornings. I start the car and let it run for a couple of minutes then i will either put it in Drive or Reverse and car will stutter and sometimes die. then start back up and drive fine. If i rev the engine in park for 30 seconds or so then take off it won't do it. Anybody havings this problem, any ideas??? Thoughts much appreciated 1998 contour V6 atx black se

are your belts and pulleys good? i have to replace a couple of pulleys, and I get problems sorta like you have (never gets really cold here though), car sometimes stutters at red lights and one time i just took foot off brake and the car moved forward like normal then accelerated like i was lightly depressing the accelerator pedal. I figure it could very well be related that I need to replace my tensioner and/or idler pulleys.

Sounds like the IAC is sticking.

I've gotten this - dies when very cold, but, it seems to be linked to the Moose.
After starting the car, and after driving for at least 2-3 minutes (generally 1.5 miles), if I attempt to idle the car while the outside temperature is ~40 F, it will usually begin Moosing and sometimes stalls. The window for doing this seems to last another ~5 minutes, after which it doesn't happen again that day.
Considering that I'm in Florida and if it gets that cold, it rarely stays that cold all day long (warmer in afternoons and thus out of range for Moose) - I suspect that I lived further north I'd see the problem anytime the car has been parked more than 2-3 hours (in the same pattern)

I have a 98 Contour LX with 80K, and am experiencing similar problems. Its idles rough also, but doesn't die once I'm actually going (runs fine). Its happened the last few days, and it has been the coldest days of the winter yet. My CEL is on now too.
I'm guessing its the IAC. My big question is will it be okay for the next 2 days before I can fix it?

Idleing rough is more likely to be dirty injectors or plugs and wires.

My vote is that you have a sticking IAC. It may help to clean it. Clean the throttle body at the same time. If the problem persists after cleaning, rap the IAC with a screwdriver handle when the car is acting up. If the problem goes away, replace the IAC.
