Found this forum last night and was able to quickly pinpoint overheating problems with my '98 Contour with 2.5L V-6....wasn't aware that the waterpump with plastic impeller was a real problem with these engines. Went through all the normal diags with thermostat and radiator cap with no results. Temp gauge still redlined....Went to NAPA and bought the metal impeller waterpump....damn near died when I pulled the old pump and found nothing there but a stump...took a decent back flush to get, what I think, is most of the impeller out of the engine. Runs like a charm once again. No more redline. For anyone with any kind of mechanical abiity, this is an easy do-it-yourselfer...not sure what the dwal would have charged for the whole job including the flush. All I know is that it cost me about $75, including a new stat and anti-freeze.

welcome...good job on finding and repairing your waterpump...i had mine done at the dealer almost a yr ago (so unfortunately i have the plastic impeller pump...the service ass though assured me that it was a different or upgrade design from the original, we'll see)

at the time i had alot of work done to the tune of 4100 or so thank goodness for my used warranty i only paid 823 outta pocket...the pump was 125.00 and when adding ford's diagnostic and coolant flush and other things it was in the 300-500 dollar range

Welcome onboard.

Both my cars had the waterpumps go last May. The FAQ section from the home page has a write-up:

Glad your back in business with no ill effects.

thanks for the welcome....wife drove the car to work today and said no problems at all.....what a relief. all i could imagine was a world of problems ahead....hopefully, I can kee the car intact for a few more years. not really a bad vehicle..just seems to have a lot of nit picky problems. got any ideas why the trunk won't open with the keyless remote?
