Does anyone know a source where I could get beefier internals; bands, gears, etc..; for a CD4E. I'm not looking for someone to rebuild it just looking for a source to buy the parts. I'm also wondering where I might find beefier internals for the MTX-75 for a 96 SE.

Thanks for any info
Mike

Level Ten for the CD4E. As for the hard parts, I really don't think there is anyone out there that makes a beefier differential or any other of the hard parts. There are no prices on their site for the Level Ten kit avaliable for the CD4E, I think you would have to shoot them an E-Mail and they would be happy to get back with you. At the same time, a lot of guys here have gone with Level 10 and could give you a lot more input there. Just remember that this kit does not includes gears and such.

And as for the MTX-75, Quiafe makes one hell of a differential that is about as bullet proof as it comes. To get some real world prices, shop around at like ShoShop, or SMP Motorsports, just about anyone listed in the links section of this site. But be looking to spend around $600 give or take. Good luck on finding aftermarket info for this tranny! If you do find something or if anyone else can add to this, please post it here. I am trying to put something together on both of these trannys.

I have to agree with UNISYS, you may want to get a hold of Terry Haines too. He is a vast wealth of knowledge on the contour especialy the MTX 75 tranny. Give him an e-mail.

His mail box was full earlier today so you may have to wait a few days to check it.

He rebuilt my Tranny with beefier parts and since then I have had no problems. PM me if you wan more info on my rebuild, it would take too much space to post here.

Visit your local Ford Dealer ... the Escape uses the same tranny with a 3.0 and Kenne Bell supercharged the Escape over a year ago without any tranny mods and that thing put down some major power to the ground ... over 250hp to the ground. Have the parts guy cross reference internals for the Escape vs. the Contour/Cougar/Mystique. Be sure to come back and fill us in as to what you found

I have been reading for about two hours now! I have found some very interesting articles about the CD4E found in the 3L Duratec option. None of them even hint to the fact that anything was done to improve upon what was done in 2000. And no, I still cannot find anything very relative to that either. Not yet anyway!

Now don't get me wrong! There were some things done to the CD4E for the 4 wheel application, but that was it. All it consisted of was working the "Rotary Couple Device" into it for the rear drive axle to exit into the differential case. All that was worked out by Dana though. As far as internals..., it seems that everything is the same.

I was really hoping to find something here! I will still look around though. There are a ton of aftermarket suppliers that I have yet to check and perform cross-references to so there may be some hope left.

The engines on the other hand, well that is another topic all together!

Well without a manual I will not be able to find sqwat on this for sure. From all the aftermarket sources that I know of, I cannot find anything that tells me for sure that certain hard parts from inside the CD4E found in the Escape are different then a pre2000. I did find that there are 3 or 4 different dive chains available and other parts, just no reference as to what their differences/vehcile applications are.

I did find proof that the maker of the CD4E, a Dutch company that I do not remember the name of right now, did "beef up" the CD4E for the Escape application, but I cannot find anything that states what was done to "beef" it up!! The only thing even close to this that I could find was that the Mazda application (Tribute) of the CD4E has more aggresive shift points in it's computer control where as the Ford stays with the softer shifts.

I am not giving up on this! I am replacing my CD4E in about a month and if I could find proof and hard facts that the Post 2001 CD4E is "beefier" then the pre2001's, I would get one!

I am just gona have to get a manual.

Just wanted to clear up the chain issue that I mentioned above. I found the answer to that and wanted to share it with everybody...

  • Drive Chain - 2.0L Ford Contour - 3/4 Wide - 45 Links - E.T. Guides - 57T Drive/52T Driven -Years 94-Up
  • Drive Chain - 2.5L Ford Contour - 1 Wide - 46 Links - E.T. Guides - 55T Drive/54T Driven -Years 94-99
  • Drive Chain - 2.0L Mazda/Probe - 3/4 Wide - 46 Links - E.T. Guides - 55T Drive/54T Driven -Years 94-Up
  • Drive Chain - 2.5L Ford Contour - 3/4 Wide - 46 Links - E.T. Guides - 55T Drive/54T Driven -Years 00-Up

Also found this as well...

  • Sprocket - Drive - 55T - .855 - 2.5L 94-99 -Years 94-99
  • Sprocket - Drive - 55T- .615 - 2.0L - All, 2.5L 00-Up -Years 94-Up
  • Sprockets - Drive/Driven - 55T/54T-.625 Wide - 26T Sun Gear - Probe, 2.5L Contour 00-Up -Years 94-Up
  • Sprockets - Drive/Driven - 55T/54T-.855 Wide - 26T Sun Gear - 2.5L Contour -Years 94-99

All this was gather from NetGearHead Online. This at least verifies, or gives us some indication, that there are some fairly major changes in the design.

If a person was to buy a Transmission (CD4E atx) for his Contour.....
How hard is it to change it out by myself? (I have a little auto-maintenance experience - 6 on a scale of 1- 10)
What special tools would someone need?

There's 100,000 miles on the car already so what have I got to lose? It's also on it's 2nd tranny already (was rebuilt at 56,000miles AAMCO/$2000).

Anyone? Thanks.

Buy the technical manual Here and then make that assesment. Actually pulling the tranny will take a solid full day and will require an engine lift.
