My CEL came on about two days ago I took it to autozone and the P1383 code (variable cam time overretarded bank#1) showed up. what does this mean? i tried to start my car again and drive home but it wouldn't start back up. I have about 75,000 miles

I assume your 'Tour has the Zetec (4-cylinder) engine. If so, Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) 99-13-8 may apply to you.

Strictly speaking, if you tell your Service Department you have P1383, they should find this TSB on their own, but it would probably be wise to "help" them find it.

That's just one possibility. Strictly speaking, it means the cam timing falls outside of a pre-set range or remains retarded even when retarded camshaft timing isn't called for.

Possible causes: Cam timing improperly set, continuous oil flow to the VCT (variable cam timing) piston chamber, VCT solenoid stuck open, or camshaft advance mechanism is binding.

The TSB I mentioned addresses the VCT control system being hung up on a machining burr or the oil feed to the VCT system being plugged with debris. It's certainly worth considering, in light of Ford's publishing a specific procedure just for that trouble code.

At 75k I would change the timing belt anyway. Just check the static timing before you take the old one off to see if that is the problem. If not, yes VCT would be checked next.
