Okay, small problem here. Just recently (yesterday) I noticed that when driving on the highway my temp gauge goes way up, like to the A of normal, however its only on the freeway. As soon as I get off the gauge drops right back down to the center or lower.
Any ideas? Generally when I drive anywhere its at the O of normal, especially on the freeway. I dunno, oh and no I haven't replaced the water pump ( I know, I know temting fate) and I have 59K on the V6. Any suggestions on what might be causing my higher than normal temperatures?
TIA Peter

Water pump may be going. That is what it sounds like. Might want to change that soon.

Our water pumps are notorious for breaking. They have a plastic impeller inside which eventually breaks into little pieces because of the heat and pressure. And because of the high-temp nature of our engines, overheating happens quickly and with irrepairable effects.
Its considered wise to replace your pump with one that has a metal impeller inside. I've heard tales of newer Contours having a black plastic impeller that is supposedly not prone to breaking like the older, white plastic one. I have no idea which years/build #'s have the newer pump, but at ~$70 for the metal pump, I'd say just replace it anyway.
Check out the mods section of the website to find the BAT catalog which carries such a pump.

I've got an interesting twist on it now too. It only happens during the night time. Twice now while driving in the day it has been itself even resting on the o during highway travel, and thats even with climbing hills. Dosen't make much sense to me.
